I have to admit to changing my review after Books and Brew discussed this book. I still didn't love it, but I've got a new appreciation for it. Thanks Joe! This is a book that you have to keep many things on your mind when you read: First, it was written in the late 1980s and was grounbreaking in its "true" portrayal of life in the subculture of Los Angeles wealth. Second, the author was 19 when he wrote it. Third, you must remember that the plot takes place over a 3 week break when the main character is home for Christmas after his first semester of college on the East Coast. And finally, the key to getting anything out of this piece of literature in which it seems like the author was grasping at straws to write is that it is supposed to feel as desperate as the characters are.
