I read this book in high school and again this March 2007 for my book club and I LOVED it both times. Forster is the master at addressing social snobbery! The straightforward passages about emotions aren't something you often see in writing anymore, and I find the analysis of them very satisfying. Plus, this is a romance, which is WONDERFUL! Check out the excellent film, too.
The author did a nice job of finding the main character's voice and I felt like I was struggling with him as his world kept changing despite his own arrested development. It felt very real as if you get a better feel for what it must be like fall into psychosis.
So Murakami books tend to feel like really rewarding uphill climbs for me, but this one was different, somehow nearly effortless to read. Crazy story of a boy...
