This is an outstanding collection of essays, and is the book I'm still giving indiscriminately as gifts or emphatically recommending 8 years after I first found it. If you've tried to read David Foster Wallace's fiction and couldn't stomach it, don't be put off his essays. While still (pleasantly) ridiculous with all those footnotes and his quirky neologisms (if that's what you call words even Merriam-Webster doesn't know), it's grounded in humor and form. All the essays have key points and progress more or less linearly to their denouement. I promise. The essay on the Illinois State Fair is about as good as sex, for me.
