What a bummer. I really had been forward to reading this book. I had enjoyed previous books written by Jaxx Steele and it is an interacial homoerotic romance, and I like that theme as well. I was very disappointed in this book. It started out pretty good, but the pacing of the storyline was WAY too rushed. Plus, our hero Russ had literally disappeared from his family AND left his boyfriend, James, behind without ANY explaination for 3 years. NO NOTE, NO PHONE CALL, NO EMAIL...NOTHING. Russell had practically been raped by a stripper. She had gotten pregnate, and since he wanted to be involved with his child's life, he marries the woman that raped him and they had a child without ANY contact to anyone. When his wife dies three years later, he calls his mother and it's instant forgiveness from everyone in the family without any angst at all. First, we'll start with the conception of the son. Russ had gone with some college friends to a strip joint. He gets drunk, and is RAPED by the stripper while his friends look on. If he told the stripper (his future wife) once to stop, he told her at least twenty times that he didn't want to have sex and to stop. She did it anyway. Well that constitutes rape in my book. No means no, right? He then finds out she is pregnant he drops EVERYTHING and marries her. He literally leaves his life behind. From his family to his wonderful boyfriend, he vanishes without any explaination. No note. No phone call, and it's like this for three years. He and his rapest wife live in seperate bedrooms, but otherwise for the happiness of his son, and the appearance of others they co-exist as a happy family. When wifey is killed in a car accident, Russ's life is thrown for a tailspin. He calls his mother and returns home. They have a quick conversation at the kitchen table about why he had disappeared and BAM. No anger, so sadness, no confusion and no resentment that Russ had literally removed himself and his son from their lives. Just immediate forgiveness and acceptance. WOW. I don't see my mother, sister or any of my other family members being so forgiving and accepting...and I have a WONDERFUL family. So I found this to be VERY unbelievable. Now for the abandoned boyfriend, James. James has gone on with his life, irregardless of Russell's disappearance. He was a likeable character, but even his immediate forgiveness and willingness to want to jump right back into a relationship with Russell left me feeling nothing but disbelief. I didn't like this book. I wanted too. But, I didn't. I am lucky I finished it. What a shame because I DID like James character. He should have kicked Russ's ass and rode off into the sunset with another prince instead. Too bad. Because I finished it I am giving it a 1.5 star.
Excellent book. Well written and hard to put down.
