Although this is one of my top reads of the year, I'm finding it very difficult to review this title. It's hard to explain the emotional ride that it pulls you through. It's not a thrill ride or even a suspenseful one and you likely will figure out the "mystery" of what happened long before it is revealed. But there is something subliminal, something almost hypnotic about the language/prose used in this book that just carry you along. I didn't automatically like (or dislike) a character but instead felt myself slowly being drawn into their world. Their circumstances didn't make them relateable but their lives were so well drawn that I found myself wanting to know more, wanting to invest myself in their story. Like I said - extremely hard to put into a review the way this book sneaks up on you as a reader. It doesn't follow any of the normal conventions of a story and, instead, creates its own avenue to appeal to a reader. Obviously, I loved the book and it's made my list of favorite books of all time. Its simplicity, its description, its sublime characterization all join together to create a story that should easily be defined as a modern classic. ARC Galley Proof
I really loved this book. It had a great surprise ending, although I was kind of piecing it together as I went along. I had an idea who the killer was, but it just didn't make sense. Well done Charlaine!
I actually got bored with this book, which kind of shocked me, since his other books have gotten such rave reviews and the synopsis seemed very engaging. So I never finished reading it. The first part was pretty good, but later, it kind of petered out so I decided to cut my losses and move onto the next book.
